The speaker of this sermon is Jonathan Edwards, who duirng the Great Awakening gave speeches in tents by traveling from town to town. His speeches were six to ten hours each and by giving them he tried to make people better Christians and let them sacrifice something. This specific speech was given in 1741 in the state of Connecticut. His purpose was to persuade the sinners to correct their path and follow the one of God. He spoke in a flat, harsh, and an intimidating tone with his audience in order to gain their full and utmost attention.
He gave depictions and images of great wrath and misery. His words filled the audience with chaos, hate, anger, and power. He said that they are all suspended over a pit of Hell and it is all up to God to decide when to send them there. Everything is in his hands and he wants to have fun with them. There is nothing holding them when they fall. The sinners are like an arrow and God has the bow, so when he shoots it, they all just let loose. Edwards also says that with the sins they commit, the water's gates will soon open and there will be a flood and each and everyone of them will go to the place they were destined.
