The title of the article was "Russia hockey plane crash highlights air travel safety issues" posted by Los Angeles Times.It was written by Sergei L. Loiko and was reported from Moscow. Hockey is a powerful and influential sport in Russia and they are experts at it. Unfortunately, this plane crash took the lives of important players and broke the heart of a strong sport team. The fact that is most significant about this accident is that the Kontinental Hockey team fell victim to one of Russia's worst weaknesses: the quality and safety of air travel. The tragedy killed 43 people: 35 players, coaches and team officials, plus eight crew members. One team player and a flight engineer survived but they are in critical conditions. There were also eleven foreighners present in the plane.
The plane basically caught on fire and landed near Volga River's banks. Investigators and officials say that this was due to the poor technical status of the aircraft. One of the league advisors said that the teams need to reconsider the quality of the planes they use and the experience of the pilots. After the crash, they have decided not to use the Yakovlev-42 jets any longer because of their unstableness. All aircrafts without an automatic system of impeding collisions with the ground or other aircraft will be taken out of service. One other official replied to this, stating that no matter what changes are made to the planes, nothing will stop crashes because they just do know how to maintain their aircraft and operate it for long periods of time without facing any problems. This was one of the major reasons why this article drew my attention. Because of human irresponsibility and carelessness others have to pay with their lives and destinies are going to change. There are numerous issues that we as humans can stop and prevent but not everyone takes action towards them. Maybe through lessons like these, we will understand someday, that if we work together and share the job and responsibility, our lives will become much better and easygoing.
This is sad news that Russia had to lose there hockey team. I hope they can recruit new coaches and team players as good as the old ones so they can start to dominate once again. Russia must really make there air travel better! I am personally scared to go on it now.

ReplyDeleteI hate plane crashes. It's so sad to see innocent lives lost for no reason, things like this get to me especially after 9/11. We were all young at that time and most of us don't remember the attacks for sure. It's just very sad to see so many lives get destroyed for no reason, no cause, and no purpose. As Armenians, we are close with the Russians and hearing about this is just devastating.
