The subject of the play is to describe the American Dream and how each person in the story achieved it. The tone of the play ranges from tragic to funny at some points, marking huge differences between the scenes.
     Since the play's setting is the 1940's, we realize that ideas and perception were totally different in America at those times. People had the American Dream set up in front of them, but not many could achieve it. Willy, for example, lived by his past and never built a future. The play informs us about the thoughts and behaviors of the characters, sometimes even depicting their memories and the most important days of their lives. Even though the play has numerous tones, it is notable that the author meant it that way. He wanted the reader to realize the different personalities of the characters, especially Willy's because he had mental issues.
